Classroom Visuals

Visual Timer

Set your timer for the activity and students will be able to see how long is left to work on their project. This timer also makes a noise when it goes off; in my friend G’s classroom student’s recognize that sound as a time to transition.

Move into Centers with choice. Each center is visited but the student chooses the order they are visited, an opportunity for autonomy

Library AAC

There are laminated AAC’s relevant to the area they are in, in each of her centers for easy modeling and communication.

Visuals like “open” and “go”

Around the classroom are visuals that encourage student communication including the door where we can “open” the door and we can “go” to the playground or “go” home or “go” to resource. These were recently added and the students in her class use them. There is also a stop sign on the door because sometimes we can’t go because it isn’t the right time.

I visited a teacher friend of mine and took pictures of some of her classroom visuals to share with you all. I love her class room it feels welcoming and there are so many well selected and utilized visuals.

I was working on a school project (the previous three posts are actually an assignment) for a class I am taking as I would toward my Bachelors to teach Elementary and Special Education although, at least right now, my dream job would be a Special Education teacher in a General Education setting. During the assignment I was talking about visuals which I am obsessed with, I love AAC, I have taken several classes through VCU’s ACE and will take more because their team is amazing and they have a lot to offer in the way of learning about our autistic students and how to help them thrive in a classroom environment, I thought of my friend’s classroom and asked if I could share it.

The newest creation

Music is a huge part of her class and she recently made this choice board that lets students pick through songs and videos as well as their accompanying movements. The binder hold choices for Morning Songs, Up and Moving Songs, Prop Songs (where the songs have props to use with the music), Fingerplay Music, and Songs they can watch.
